CogAT Test Examples for 2nd Grade
1. What is CogAT?
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) are designed to measure the potential of students’ academic success in the three areas: Verbal, Quantitative and Nonverbal. Although its primary goal is to assess students’ reasoning abilities, CogAT can also provide predicted achievement scores when administered with The Iowa Tests (ITBS® – Which is copyrighted by Riverside Publishing company. ITBS are very popular in private schools to measure the basic academic skills.)
2. Why will I take CogAT?
Many public and private schools nationwide use CogAT as one of the test to identify the candidates for their Gifted and Talented programs. Another popular test used is NNAT.
3. Where and When to take CogAT?
Your children’s schools will host the tests. If your children are attending private schools, you might find the public schools have affiliated CogAT testing centers. Go to your local public system to find the testing date and testing places. In Fairfax County VA public schools, CogAT is administrated for grade 2 and above grades.

4. Does your practice work?
The answer is Yes and No. There are totally 138 questions in our sample test. The real CogAt test contains 120 questions. Our sample test gives you an idea what the format of the Cogat test is. Even it contains lots of sample questions, it might still not be enough to prepare for the test. I strongly suggest that you use the Building Thinking Skills Level 1
During the process of preparing my son for the GT tests, we spent lots of time and money on researching the CogAT test. (We sent my son to academic afterschool, and consulted the test administer teacher.) My son got a very high score. (The following video shows his SCAT, CogAT, NNAT high scores.) We also found that there are some misleading information around. For example, the format of CogAT tests is different for K- 2nd grade and for 3rd + graders. Because of the limit of the reading abilities for the 2nd and under graders, the format of the test is totally different. The questions are read to students instead of printed on the answer sheets, and answer choices. Lots of parents who bought some other preparation books found out that children’s tests are in different formats. In order to let parents be familiar with the K-2 level CogAT test format, I made this practice test. However, this practice test is only to help children to get used to the test format. To be honest, it will not help parentes to get an idea of how their child might do on the real CogAT test.
It happened that lots of children are not familiar with the test format and could not follow the listening instructions during the test and got lower scores. The sole purpose of this practice test is to familiarize your children with the level K-2 CogAT tests. After your children take this practice tests at home, they will be familiar with the graphic test questions. To improve your children’s skills, we highly recommend you to buy Critial thinking books.
