NNAT Sample Test for 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, Grade K

1. What is the NNAT?

The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) is a brief, culture-fair, nonverbal measure of problem solving ability. NNAT items were developed to assess ability without requiring students to read, write or speak, and instead require students to rely on observation and reasoning abilities. It tests the skills of Pattern Completion, Reasoning by Analogy, Serial Reasoning, and Spatial Visualization. It is normally used together with other test like CogAT which includes verbal section. If a student’s verbal section score of CogAT is low and the student’s first language is not English, higher NNAT scores can help to identify this student as having the potential to achieve higher in school later on. I know children with lower CogAT verbal score but high NNAT score that get into gifted and talented programs.

2. Why should I take the NNAT?

Many public and private schools nationwide use the NNAT as one of the test to identify the candidates for their Gifted and Talented programs. Another popular test used is CogAT.

3. Where and when will I take the NNAT?

Your children’s schools will host the tests. If your children are attending private schools, you might have to find public schools that have affiliated NNAT testing centers. Go to your local public system to find the testing date and testing places. In Fairfax County VA public schools, NNAT is administrated for grade 1 and above grades.

4. Does your practice work?

The answer is Yes and No. This sample test is longer than the real test. For Grade K sample test, it contains 40 questions. For Grade 1 sample test, it contains 41 questions. For Grade 2 Sample test, it contains 42 questions. (The real test for these three grades contain 38 questions.) It gives you an idea about the format of the NNAT test. It might not be enough to prepare for the test.

We highly recommend a Game called the Set Game. Your kids will have a lot of fun and learn a lot when they play. I also strongly suggest that you use the Building Thinking Skills Level 1 or Level 2 books or Building Thinking Skills Software. After your child finishes the Building Thinking Skills, you can use our sample test to familiarize your child with the test format.

During the process of preparing my son for the GT tests, we spent lots of time and money on researching the NNAT test. (We sent my son to academic afterschool, and consulted the test administer teacher.) My son got a very high score. (The following video shows his SCAT, CogAT, NNAT high scores.)

Note: All these questions in the sample test are created by myself to simulate the real NNAT. If your child has mastered Building Thinking Skills, you can let your child does our sample test several times. Your child will do fine in the real test.

5. How Long Does the Testing Take?

Students have 30 minutes to complete the 38 item multiple choice test. The total testing time is approximately 40 minutes.
