SOL Practice Tests – (VA Released SOL Tests)

1. What is SOL?

Common Wealth of Virginia sets the rigorous academic standards, also known as the Standards of Learning (SOL). So it is only for Virginians. It is administered annually as a means to measure the achievement of public schools. Virginia Department of Education manages it.

2. Which grade students will take the SOL test?

Normally, students in grade 3 and above in public schools will take the SOL tests annually.

3. Are SOL scores part of your children’s academic record?

The SOL scores are mostly used as statistics data to represent a school as a whole in the academic progress. There are so many SOL analysis about which school improves its math/reading/history/science etc as a measure to see the results of its effort. The scores of SOL are not in your child’s report card.

4. Why you as a parent should help your child to prepare for SOL at home?

So, it sounds that you can ignore your child’s SOL test, is that right? The answer is no. SOL scores still means a lot to your child at his/her school. Sometime, the new school year teachers will refer to the SOL scores as a measure of different student’s strength/weakness in certain field. School may also use the SOL scores to decide the eligibilities of certain course if there is limits resources. For example, not every student in 7th grade can take Algebra 1. Only those who took IAAT (Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test) and 7th grade SOL tests and pass with advanced can enroll in Algebra 1. Some honor classes also use SOL score as a cut-off criteria. If your kid is not eligible to take Algebra 1 in 7th grade, he/she is likely to lose the late competition in TJHSST admission and AP courses. Even your child choose not to go to TJHSST (Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology), it is still necessary to take Algebra 1 early in 7th grade, so he/she can take Algebra 2 in 8th or 9th grade and Geometry in 9th grade, trigonometry in 10th grade, pre-calculus in 11th grade and calculus in 12th grade.

5. What scores should I expect my child to get?

The SOL score ranges from 0 to 600. A score of 400 represents the “minimal” level of proficiency, while 500 represents “advanced proficiency.” For most AAP( Advanced Academic Program, another name for the previous Gifted and Talented program), the 500 score is considered as a low score while it is consider a good score in a non AAP class. 6. How do you help your child to prepare for SOL tests?

So even we don’t like SOL tests at all, we
cannot ignore it. We have to deal with it with least effort. What should we do?
To tell you the truth, I didn’t put too much time and effort on my son’s SOL tests last
year. He got 600 on every subject he was tested. The most important thing for
parents is to let your child to be familiar with the test format and question
format. If your kid is familiar with the SOL format by practice with past real
SOL test questions, he/she will pass the SOL test easily with advanced score.
